What do Smart TVs, Smart phones, tablets and gaming consoles have in common?… They all allow their users access to the internet.

Ofcom recently released its annual summary of online usage, which stated that 90% of all UK adults now use the internet, with people over the age of 16 spending more than 20.5 hours per week online. This has doubled since 2005.

The main contributors to this dramatic increase are tablets and smartphones.

39% of adults have started to use tablets as their main source of the internet; this is an increase of 29% since 2005. Gaming apps are another reason tablet use has increased, 15% of the adults polled said they use their tablet for this purpose.  42% said they used instant messaging on their smartphones, which is probably down to the increased popularity of Facebook messenger and Whatsapp.

It is not clear whether the 20.5 hours includes any time spent online at work.
