Somerset County Council were looking at moving from a legacy Unify OpenScape Voice (OSV) platform to streamline telephony and reduce overall costs.

Due to the Covid 19 Pandemic the ability to provide a more stable telephony platform for home working was also required. As the Council were already using Microsoft Teams for internal communications, migrating all users to Teams was the obvious choice.

Challenges arose due to the cost of Microsoft Calling Plans and traditional Direct Routing per user per month costs, plus lower levels of service reliability than provided by existing telephony services.

In late 2020 SCC issued an open tender for solutions and in a competitive field Beckett’s Teams Enabled SIP trunks were chosen as the preferred option. These provided concurrent pricing as opposed to per user per month, and enhanced levels of service including a 99.999% uptime SLA.

By utilising Beckett’s expertise in legacy OSV and Teams enabled telephony Somerset are able to provide a managed migration from the OSV to Teams.  This provides network based Teams enabled SIP Trunks, SIP trunks into the existing OSV, and professional services for integration, migration and Teams set up.

The project started in January 2021 and 3,000 users were migrated successfully by the 30th April.
