Spam calls are a pain for everyone, and with Teams needing you to have a DDI – that is a number with can be directly dialled by anyone externally – they can be a bit harder to control than with an on site telephone system.

There are a couple of easy processes to follow to ensure you can manage Spam calls if they become an issues for you:

  1. Blocking Numbers:
    • You can block specific spam numbers directly from your Teams app:
      • Click the Calls icon.
      • Locate the spam number in the Calls menu.
      • Click the three dots next to the contact and click the “block” button:
  1. Do Not Disturb Mode:

Activate “Do Not Disturb” mode to prevent incoming calls from disturbing you. This means calls with go directly to your Voicemail and notifications are turned off.

  1. Forward All Calls:

If you still want to get notifications and chats, then go into your settings, go to calls and click the forward all calls tab:

This will send all calls to your voicemail or another number that you input – for example a colleague or reception.

If you have Admin rights to the your Teams Tenancy then you can also set up Spam Filterining

  • Spam Filtering:
    • Admins: In Microsoft Teams, you can configure spam filtering for inbound calls from the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Teams can detect potential spam calls and notify users with a “Spam Likely” notification.
    • Options:
      • On: Spam filtering is fully enabled, performing both Basic and Captcha Interactive Voice Response (IVR) checks. Users receive a “Spam Likely” notification.
      • On without IVR: Partially enabled, with disabled Captcha IVR checks. Users still get the “Spam Likely” notification, and high-scoring calls may be dropped.
      • Off – No filtering or notification is enabled.

With these options you can handle Spam effectively within Teams, and don’t forget there is also the option for delegate answering as well.
